Arctic Food Session at the ICASS IX Conference

Greenland Perspective will participate in the ICASS IX Conference held in Umeå in Sweden, representing our project “The Arctic as a Food Producing Region”.  This year’s conference is themed “People & Place”, reflecting the opportunities and challenges in the Arctic that impact people and places following changes in climate, industry, globalization, pollution and more.

One main theme brought up by the conference is Arctic food.  In line with this, Greenland Perspective and partners will be hosting a dedicated session on “The Arctic as a Food Producing Region” at the conference. Researchers will examine and discuss the status and potential development of various food production systems in the Arctic. There will be presentations and discussion of papers that address food production opportunities which may lead to sustained economic development for Arctic communities, initiatives that are being used to establish more sustainable local food systems, and the cultural and legal tensions that may exist when wildlife resources gain commercial value.

ICASS takes place in Umeå in Sweden from 8-12 June 2017 and is organized by the International Arctic Social Sciences Association.
